Summer’s Not Done Til You’ve Been to Fred’s Shanty

Every year, right after Memorial Day, we wait excitedly for Fred’s Shanty to open for the season. You have to get there quick because they close up again after Labor Day. Fred’s Shanty is just a little food shack on the Thames River in New London but it is a must stop on your Summer travels.

You don’t go to Fred’s Shanty for upscale food. You go there to get your taste of Summer by ordering foot long hotdogs, hamburgers, and seafood like clam strips and Lobster rolls. My favorite is the footlong hotdog, grilled to perfection and served on a crispy grilled bun with super thin french fries. Super thin french fries are my favorite!

You can sit in your car or on a picnic table overlooking the boats docked by the river. Boating on the Thames River Connecticut

Or grab your order and head down to Ocean Beach Park. If you go after 6 pm parking is free and you can sit on the boardwalk and ride the Carousel

If the weather is good this is the best scene you will find in New London and the best, cheap eats too!
